UNIONDALE, Long Island (WABC) -- Plans for a potential casino in Nassau County took a hit on Wednesday after Las Vegas Sands announced it is no longer pursuing a New York gaming license.
The Las Vegas Sands was set to take control of the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island after lawmakers voted to approve a 42-year lease agreement last year.
In a statement, Las Vegas Sands said that while they "strongly believe in the development opportunity of a land-based downstate casino license in New York," and continue to believe that the Nassau Coliseum site offers the best location for that development, they are concerned about the impact of the potential legalization of iGaming on the market and projected returns.
"We are in the process of attempting to secure an agreement with a third party to whom we can transact the opportunity to bid for a casino license on the Nassau Coliseum site," Las Vegas Sands said in a statement. "This would include those that may be able to address both land-based and digital markets in New York."
The company says they have decided not to bid for a casino license in New York, and instead says they believe the best use of their capital in the near term is to purchase Las Vegas Sands and Sands China shares.
Nassau County says it will decide in the next 30 days whether to continue pursuing a casino at Nassau Coliseum, or whether to redevelop the site without one.
"Nassau County will crystallize within the next 30 days whether or not to entertain a casino component or develop the site without. In either event there will be an exciting new development that will create jobs and positive economic activity," said Chris Boyle, Director of Communications for Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, in a statement following Las Vegas Sands' announcement.
Blakeman says that if the county can find a new operator, they would fill the shoes of Sands, "so nothing's been slowed down."
Nassau Legislator Seth Koslow, who voted for the lease, but is a political opponent of Blakeman, is now sending the county executive a cease and desist letter, accusing him of a lack of transparency regarding taxpayer money.
Blakeman insists, if anything, the county continues to make money off the site from the Sands.
"They've paid us $54 million plus already, so it's been a financial boon to the county," Blakeman said.
From Hofstra University to neighboring communities like Garden City, there's been no shortage of opponents who say they won't give up until the casino plan is dead.
"We believe from the beginning that there was a short cut process that was engaged in here, and that the casino did not do the proper work environmentally," Garden City Mayor Edward Finneran said.
"This is the worst place that you could possibly locate a casino, and at the end of the day there was just no real public support for this project," said Monica Kelly of the Say No to the Casino Association.

Great Neck Plaza remained the county’s highest-ranked community in the report. Missing man found dead in burned out home after devastating fire in Island Park

ISLAND PARK, New York (WABC) -- A man who was missing after a devastating fire destroyed a home in Island Park in Nassau County, was found dead in the rubble.The fire broke out in the home on Sunset Avenue just after 2 a.m. Monday.Heavy rain and high winds fueled the flames and the structure was a complete loss."I smelled a fireplace, but that was strange, and sometimes people will burn the fireplace or use the fireplace but it was very strong, very quick, but it wasn't normal. ISLAND PARK, New York (WABC) -- A man who was missing after a devastating fire destroyed a home in Island Park in Nassau County, was found dead in the rubble.
The fire broke out in the home on Sunset Avenue just after 2 a.m. Monday.
Heavy rain and high winds fueled the flames and the structure was a complete loss.
"I smelled a fireplace, but that was strange, and sometimes people will burn the fireplace or use the fireplace but it was very strong, very quick, but it wasn't normal. So, I looked through the window and the neighbor's house was on fire," said Maggie Stovickova, a Long Beach resident.
She lives right across the street from the house that went up in flames.
The fire became so intense that the siding of a next door neighbor's house caught fire.
Nassau County Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said the fire was difficult to tackle.
"There were storms in the area, high winds, there were thunderstorms, so we're trying to look at lightning strikes, all other types of electrical emergencies, transformers, etc.," he said.
It took the efforts of more than 100 firefighters to eventually get the fire extinguished.
Firefighters later recovered the body of a man, who was originally unaccounted for, from the burned out home.
Neighbors described him as a veteran in his 80s who is a staple on the block.
"He is a good guy, he is always puttering around the house working, he owns this little lot next to our house to that goes to the water, so yeah he's a good guy, he was always nice to our kids," said neighbor Russell Cassar.
Fire officials, police and the town of Hempstead had worked together to meticulously sift through the rubble before discovering the body.
"We don't like to speculate, but the opinions are that maybe, and that's why we're going to take our time and slowly go through the rubble and the structure to make sure that if that person is in there, that we'll work that area, if not, at least we can confirm it, so it's going to be a long investigation and a long process this morning," Uttaro said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, however it is not considered suspicious at this time, according to fire officials.

A Jersey Mike’s worker in Nassau County who “directly handled food” has tested positive for hepatitis A, leaving customers who ate at the sandwich shop recently at risk, health officials warned.
County health officials confirmed late Friday that an employee at the Jersey Mike’s in Oceanside tested positive for hepatitis A and said that anyone who ate or drank there — or visited the shop’s bathroom — between April 5 and April 19 may have been exposed.
Officials also revealed the worker directly handled food at the sub store, potentially contaminating all of the ingredients and tableware. And they are urging anyone who visited the location to contact their doctor immediately.
“Though the risk of transmission is considered low, out of an abundance of caution, individuals who may have been exposed are advised to speak to their healthcare provider,” the Nassau County Department of Health said in a statement.
It is unclear how the Jersey Mike’s worker contracted the virus.
Hepatitis A — a liver infection — typically spreads when an infected person doesn’t wash their hands properly after using the bathroom, leaving traces of fecal matter on food, drinks or anything they touch, officials said.
Antibiotics cannot treat someone once symptoms appear — generally between two to seven weeks after being exposed — although they can take up to a month to show up.
Symptoms may include the yellowing of your skin and eyes, nausea, stomach pain, joint pain or even dark urine and pale stools, according to the CDC.
The virus is typically mild and short-term, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — but can be deadly in rare circumstances, especially for people over 50 and those with preexisting conditions or compromised immune systems.
Anyone who’s already had hepatitis A or received both doses of the vaccine is protected, according to the health department, although a single vaccine dose may help prevent infection if given within two weeks of exposure.
