While another chance for light snow showers is on the way for late Saturday night into early Sunday, most of Saturday will just be cold and dry.

It will be partly cloudy and cold overnight. The wind will not be strong, but a light breeze will make lows near 20 degrees feel like the low to mid-teens - dress warmly!

Early sun on Saturday morning will give way to a mostly cloudy sky by afternoon with high temperatures struggling to reach the freezing mark again.

Toward midnight Sunday through 8 a.m. Sunday, there is the chance for a quick round of scattered light snow and flurries.

A coating to 1 inch of snow is possible during this time. Most of Long Island will get a fresh coating of snow, but watch out for some slippery spots again early Sunday morning.

The colder than average weather will continue through Monday, but there is a nice "warmup" on the way starting next Tuesday. High temperatures will be above average for a change. The normal average high temperature this time of year is around 40 degrees on Long Island. Most of next week ends up in the mid- to upper-40s with a few rain showers Wednesday and Friday.

OVERNIGHT: Partly cloudy and cold with lows near 20 degrees. It will feel like around 10 to 20 degrees with a west-northwest wind around 5 to 15 mph.

SATURDAY: Early sun gives way to a mostly cloudy sky by the afternoon. Cold and dry. Highs around 32 degrees. Lows near 22 degrees. Light snow showers and flurries develop after midnight.

SUNDAY: EARLY LIGHT SNOW — Scattered light snow showers and flurries before 8 a.m. Less than 1 inch of snow will fall but could lead to a few slippery spots to start the day. Sun and clouds for the afternoon. Highs around 33 degrees. Lows near 19 degrees.

WEDNESDAY: A few rain showers, mainly to start the day. Highs around 46 degrees. Lows near 32 degrees.

The report is a product of nationwide real estate firm Redfin.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY. — Nassau County was the strongest seller’s market of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the country in November, recently published data from nationwide real estate firm Redfin shows. The data shows Nassau with 39 percent more prospective buyers than homeowners looking to sell, bucking a nationwide trend toward a buyer’s market.

Redfin published its findings Dec. 23, in which Nassau placed atop a list of seller’s markets that includes Montgomery, P.A., Newark, N.J., New Brunswick, N.J., Milwaukee, San Francisco and Cleveland. In this instance, a market with more than 10 percent more buyers than sellers was classified as a sellers’ market, while markets where the inverse is true were considered buyers’ markets. Traditionally, the balance of buyers and sellers dictates who has more leverage when negotiating the purchase of real estate. In a buyer’s market, homeowners might need to make concessions on price or other factors to get the deal over the line, while a seller’s market could force buyers to pony up a bit more.

Nationwide, the balance is almost the opposite of Nassau County: Redfin estimated over 37 percent more home sellers than buyers in the U.S. housing market in November, up from 35.6 percent in October. Driving that trend is a decline in buyers, as the number of buyers dropped an estimated 2.5 percent from October to November, the biggest monthly decline since April. The new estimated buyer population — 1.43 million — is the second-lowest on record. The lowest? April 2020, when the real estate market felt the effects of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the number of buyers has dropped across America, data still shows Nassau as a place where people are looking to buy; of the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the country, Nassau ranked twelfth in number of buyers, outpacing cities including Baltimore, Boston, Denver and Miami.

As for Nassau's neighbors to the west, New York City's real estate market is relatively balanced, with a one-percent difference between its number of buyers and sellers. The number of buyers in the city, Redfin data shows, is down 13.6-percent year-over-year, while the number of sellers is up five-and-a-half percentage points in the same timespan.

New York State is experiencing the highest number of flu cases ever recorded in a single week, according to a New York State Department of Health press release issued Friday afternoon, Dec. 26.

The department said 71,123 laboratory-confirmed flu cases were reported statewide for the seven-day period ending Dec. 20, the highest weekly total since influenza was made reportable in 2004. The total represents a 38% increase over the prior week, the department said.

Hospitalizations also climbed sharply. NYSDOH reported 3,666 influenza-related hospitalizations statewide for the same week, up 63% from the previous week.

On Long Island, Suffolk County recorded 7,571 cases for the week ending Dec. 20, including 6,402 confirmed influenza type A cases, according to the state’s Flu-Tracker dashboard. Nassau County recorded 7,924 cases, including 6,875 confirmed type A cases. Nassau and Suffolk posted the highest county totals outside New York City. Suffolk recorded 313 flu hospitalizations for the week.

County-level case counts and hospitalizations are published by NYSDOH through Health Data NY datasets that break down influenza activity by week and county.

Statewide this flu season through Dec. 20, NYSDOH reported 189,312 laboratory-confirmed cases and 9,059 hospitalizations.

Earlier this month, the state declared influenza “prevalent,” a designation that requires health care facilities and agencies to ensure that personnel who have not received this season’s flu vaccine wear masks in areas where patients and residents may be present, according to the department.

Nationally, influenza activity is also increasing. In its most recent weekly FluView surveillance update (Week 50, ending Dec. 13), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported “sustained elevated activity” across multiple indicators and said flu activity is expected to continue for weeks.

CDC reported that influenza A made up nearly all viruses identified by public health labs, and that more than three-quarters of influenza A viruses were subtyped; among those, nearly 90% were A(H3N2) “subclade K,” according to the CDC.

The CDC also estimated at least 4.6 million illnesses, 49,000 hospitalizations and 1,900 deaths from flu so far this season.

Because of the Christmas holiday, the CDC said its Week 51 FluView report will be posted on Dec. 30.

Health officials continue to urge vaccination and common-sense precautions such as staying home when sick and practicing everyday preventive measures. The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older who has not yet been vaccinated this season, and notes that prescription antiviral medications can help treat flu, especially for people at higher risk for complications, if started early.

While state case counts reflect laboratory-confirmed reports, both state and federal public health agencies caution that flu illness in the community can be broader than surveillance numbers alone because not everyone who gets sick seeks care or gets tested.

Bethpage State Park opens parts of its five golf courses to sledders from December 1-March 31 annually as long as there is snow is on the ground. It's tranquil, picturesque, and perfect for sledders of all ages and abilities. Only steerable sleighs are allowed at this location, no inflatable sleds are permitted. On the morning after a big snowfall, the park staff asks that you give it a couple of hours to clear out the parking lots before heading over. This park has plenty of space for everyone and sledding hills that are perfect for little ones. When you need a break from the action, head down to the beach to enjoy some wintertime water views.

Head to "Sled Hill" near Parking Field 1 when flakes have fallen in this massive Nassau County park. The sledding hill is a wide, safe thrill for both children and adults. The park closes at dusk and is a bunny jump away from the Northwell Health Ice Center, where you can go ice skating at one of the indoor or outdoor rinks.

Easy to overlook but hard to avoid, this beautiful park is near some of the hilliest terrain in Nassau County, making it a popular local spot to go sledding and enjoy a Long Island snowfall.

This 35-acre, sports-oriented county park transforms into one of south Nassau's top sledding hills once snow hits the ground. This park is a good spot for all ages to enjoy with the family.

Locals know the sledding hills here as some of the best around. The high school is conveniently just off the Long Island Expressway on Shelter Rock Road.

Who knew sledding near a flat football field could be such fun? It's safe and popular. On weekends, the snow is smooth, and the field is empty, providing the perfect sledding hill and formula for winter fun.

This popular destination is known for the steep sledding hills around the sunken baseball fields. There are also lots of benches and restrooms for moms and dads in need of a break.

Don't let the single sledding hill fool you: Newbridge offers a steep climb and descent, perfect for daredevils. Newbridge Road Park is home also to Newbridge Ice Arena.

Top Sledding Hills in Suffolk County

One of the highest points on Long Island, Bald Hill thrills sledders with long runs and maximum elevation. The former home of the Bald Hill Ski Bowl is easily accessible and less than a mile from LIE at Exit 63.

This 463-acre state park offers a perfect sledding hill for novices, but avoid the hills near the large lake.

A gentle sledding hill, perfect for beginners, the Grange is a popular choice for families who live in an otherwise flat part of southern Suffolk County.

The sledding hills at this 13-acre park are a popular place to swoosh and slide. Visitors take note: When you are at the top of the sledding hill, the steeper terrain is to the left. The park also offers restrooms and free Wi-Fi access.

This park is a small space, but residents of northwest Suffolk swear by its steep sledding hills and lengthy runs. Four trees dot the primary run, forming ideal lane dividers.

A popular warm-weather destination in the Town of Smithtown, savvy locals know Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve is a paradise for dedicated sledders come the winter. As soon as you pull into the parking lot, you will see kids sledding right on the front field. The sledding hill at this park is open to Smithtown residents and their guests only.

North Forkers have flocked here for generations, but be wary of the traffic as you cross the region's busiest street.

This expansive property in the Hamptons featuring sledding hills is set off from busy streets and ideal for young children.

The sledding hills at the SHUFSD Offices on Weston Street are perfect for little legs. The hill isn't too steep and there's plenty of room for everyone.

There are several potential sledding hills in Commack, but steep elevation changes near the community Little League field make this a favorite. It was formerly known as Wicks Road Park.

Of course, there are plenty more sledding hills across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Most area parks have FREE parking and are open as the weather permits. Some have accumulation rules, so call in advance before you bundle up the kids and head over.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A major winter snowstorm is hammering the Tri-State area, dropping 1-2 inches per hour during the brunt in some parts.

The snow began Friday evening and began tapering off Saturday morning.

The Hudson Valley, Connecticut, northernmost New Jersey and parts of Long Island have seen the heaviest snow totals, with sleet knocking down accumulations in New York City and areas to the south and west.

The National Weather Service reported 4.3" in Central Park at 7 a.m. Saturday, marking the first time Central Park has seen snowfall greater than 4" since the winter storm of January 2022, when 8.3" was observed.
